BIJAN MOOSAVI
Raised in Tehran and based in London
Bijan Moosavi is an exiled Iranian multimedia artist based in London. Working mainly across installation, film, performance, music, and print, he uses ‘neoliberalism’ itself as a primary artistic material. His practice is rooted in the understanding that under neoliberalism, nearly all aspects of life—including artistic production—are governed by market logic. He examines what it means to make art in an era when identity, belief, ethics, and dissent are readily absorbed into speculative systems of branding, value extraction, and commodification. Drawing on the legacies of Situationist International, Nouveau Réalisme, The Independent Group, and the discourse around Capitalist Realism, he appropriates the aesthetic logic of neoliberalism to construct a language that reflects our present—shaped by decades of marketisation, globalization, individualization, speculation, optimization, and beyond.
Since 2016, he has developed works such as: a start-up specializing in art de-politicization services (film); an electric guitar cleansed of sin (sculpture); a religious nationalist rock band (performance); an Islamic-compliant nightclub from the future (performance, film and exhibition); and a refugee centre from 2058 profiting from climate collapse (exhibition). He has also produced works in the form of YouTube reaction videos, motivational talks, business pitches, drone footage and commercial ads—formats drawn from internet culture that amplify the absurdity of neoliberal subjectivity. His current focus is on class divisions within the art world, explored through the aesthetics and vocabulary of self-help culture—one of neoliberalism’s most seductive and ideological tools.
