Iran Through Airwaves

On March the 30th of 2012 Iran Through Airwaves streamed 7 of the most popular local Iranian radio stations through a multi-channel sound installation format into Enjoy Art Space in Leeds in order to take the audience for a real-time sonic experience of being in public spaces in Iran. At the same time Iran Through Airwaves created a sonic environment that reflected and made an impression of the sound cultures that exist within those political borders.

Considering the fact that the audio materials and radio programmes used in this installation were consisted much of the same sonic ingredients (due to the use of Iranian language on a large scale, Iranian musical traditions, or even vigilant choices of particular types of musical and other sonic and literary products that would meet with the Islamic principles of the state and have become a tradition in itself since the 1979 revolution in Iran, etc.), Iran Through Airwaves tried to put this idea into practice and examine whether this collection of sounds brought together as a whole was capable of creating a unique and distinctive atmosphere reminiscence of the cultural characteristics of the Iranian nation through the medium of sound.
